Savona

Tucked into a forested seaside nook of West Vancouver BC, locals Steven Park, Sarah, and their daughter have fully renovated their new home. Originally completed in 1971 (at left), the house was designed to the California Sea Ranch design movement of the day.

Made with extensive use of wood, stone and glass, and featuring a winding circular staircase between the 2 floors, the home was widely featured in design magazines including Western Living and Canadian Homes upon original completion.

Despite its good bones, the house was in need of serious remodelling.

In 2017 –roughly 50 years after build, Steven and Sarah set to work on reimagining their Sea Ranch.

SP: We kept the in-balcony speakers (updated) removed the railing to the bedroom and put in radiant heat under the CRAFT floor. It’s super cozy and the sound system is amazing. It’s more open to the kitchen now as we pulled a section of the rock wall down.

The nooks and rooms of this house bring to mind the Swedish word ‘Lagom’ (pronounced [lɑ̂ːɡɔm]) meaning “just the right amount”. The word can be variously translated as “in moderation”, “in balance”, “perfect-simple”, and “suitable” (in matter of amounts).

The natural colour of Hickory’s heartwood starts out with challenging varied colour tones and very lively patterns.

The rigorous grading of our Elite Grade wood that goes into a SAVONA floor is strictly selected to minimize colour variation and to maximize clear surfaces, while still maintaining a minimal amount of the wood’s natural characteristics.

Savona is then put through a multi-step, specialized colour treatment process to create a light grey tone without changing the underlying wood’s inherent beauty.

The natural backdrop and neat angles of this little zen nook is inviting to all the senses, including touch when down on floor; perfect for Yogis at heart.
